I Don’t Like Spam

(FYI, I took a month hiatus from blogging but I’m back).

I *hate* email spam – possibly with more passion than the typical email user.  I rant about it all the time.  And for good reason.  Spam is out of control.  Danny Goodman posts his spam filtering results at http://spamwars.com/stats.html.  About 95% of his email is unwanted.  O’Reilly Media is about the same.  There are some insights on spam over at O’Reilly Radar.  My email is currently handled by 1&1 but their spam filtering sucks.  I’ll be switching as soon as I can settle on something new.  Previously I was using SpamSoap and it was fantastic but $25 / month for 3 people is too much for just spam filtering.  There are some technical solutions using digital signatures and / or encryption that can help cut down on the problem but nothing is getting wide adoption.  We won’t be using SMTP broadly in 5 years.  The spammers have us overrun.
