A while back I was contacted by some researchers to participate in a survey of podcasters (I do a podcast for developers called Devcasting). I happily participated. They have published some basic survey results. Here it is:

The researchers warn us that these results are not necessarily representative of the “podosphere” (yuck, I hate that word) because things are changing so fast, no one knows how big the “podosphere” is, and of course getting a random sample is impossible (podcasters who participate are self-selected to participate and might not represent podcasters in general). A few interesting tidbits:
- Most of the respondents were in North America or Europe.
- There are significantly more men than women podcasting. I was surprised at how big the difference is.
- North American podcasters spend more time on their podcasts each week and produce longer podcasts on average (36 minutes vs. 25 minutes).
- 57% of North Amercian podcasters and 40% of European podcasters say their podcast is commercially successfully or that they have commercial ambitions.
- 11% report podcasting as their main source of income (wow).
