Using PDAs with Vista

If you have a Windows Mobile PDA and are upgrading to Vista, a few tips I just came across in an email thread:

  • Run Windows Update in Vista before trying to sync with a WM device.  This will get you the latest version of Windows Mobile Device Center.  There is some kind of issue with the version of WMDC shipping on Vista.  I’ve heard that you need to plug in the device once, run Windows Update, and then plug in the device again.
  • Do not try to upgrade the ROM of your device from Vista.  If you need to do a ROM upgrade, do it from a Windows XP machine.  If you’ve tried a ROM upgrade from Vista and hosed your PDA, try re-flashing it from XP.  If XP won’t recognize the device, let it sit for a few days until the power is completely discharged.  You should then be able to reinitialize the device.
  • I’ve heard rumours that Windows Live OneCare can cause problems – sorry I don’t have any specifics.
  • Check for other known problems in the Windows Mobile Device Center Troubleshooting Guide.
